Goya's Ghosts is a 2006 historical drama film directed by Milos Forman. Set in 18th century Spain, the film revolves around the famous painter Francisco Goya (played by Stellan Skarsgård) and his muse, Ines (played by Natalie Portman).

Ines is accused of heresy by a fanatical monk named Lorenzo (played by Javier Bardem) and is imprisoned and tortured by the Spanish Inquisition. Despite Goya's attempts to save her, Ines is pronounced guilty and burned at the stake.

Meanwhile, Goya is approached by Brother Lorenzo to create a portrait and is forced to comply with the monk's demands in order to protect himself and his family from the Inquisition's wrath.

Years later, during the Napoleonic invasion of Spain, Goya has become a disillusioned and broken man, haunted by his memories of Ines and his complicity with the Inquisition. He is visited by Lorenzo, who has renounced his previous fanaticism and now seeks Goya's help in exposing the corruption of the Inquisition.

The film explores themes of religious fanaticism, political corruption, and artistic expression, and features a stellar cast including Randy Quaid, Michael Lonsdale, and José Luis Gómez. Despite mixed reviews, Goya's Ghosts remains a visually stunning and thought-provoking examination of one of Spain's most celebrated artists.
