Guardians of the Great Apes

Drama  United States of America

Dian Fossey was an American zoologist who travelled to Africa to study the mountain gorillas of Rwanda in 1967. Originally planning to stay for only 6 months, Fossey fell in love with the gorillas and stayed for over a decade. She became known for her work studying and observing the gorilla groups, often spending hours each day in close proximity to them.

Fossey's work brought attention to the plight of the gorillas, who were at that time threatened by poaching and habitat loss. She founded the Karisoke Research Center, which aimed to protect the gorillas and their habitat. Fossey also worked to educate the local community about the importance of conservation and the value of the gorillas.

In 1985, Fossey was murdered in her research cabin, likely by poachers. Her death shocked the world and brought even more attention to the plight of the gorillas. Today, the mountain gorilla population is increasing thanks in large part to Fossey's work and the conservation efforts of many individuals and organizations.

Gorillas in the Mist is a film based on Fossey's life and work, starring Sigourney Weaver as Fossey. The film was critically acclaimed and helped to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and the need to protect endangered species like the mountain gorillas.
