Gone to Earth is a 1950 British film directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, based on the novel of the same name by Mary Webb. The film is set in the 1890s in rural Shropshire, England, and tells the story of Hazel Woods, a young gypsy girl who is torn between her love for animals and her romantic entanglements with two very different men.

Despite her initial resistance, Hazel finds herself drawn to Jack Reddin, a wealthy and ruthless squire who is obsessed with fox hunting. Meanwhile, she also falls in love with Edward Marston (Cyril Cusack), a timid and idealistic parish priest who shares her love for nature and animals.

As the two men vie for her affections, Hazel must navigate a complex web of social conventions and make a difficult choice about the kind of life she wants to lead. Ultimately, she must decide whether to follow her heart or conform to the expectations of those around her.

The film was praised for its lush cinematography and its portrayal of nature, as well as for Jennifer Jones's performance as Hazel, which won her a Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival. However, it was also controversial for its depiction of sexual desire and its sympathetic portrayal of gypsy culture. Today, it is considered a classic of British cinema and a highlight of Powell and Pressburger's illustrious careers.
