Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro are childhood friends who grew up in the same neighborhood as Amanda McCready, the missing girl. As they investigate the case, they discover that Amanda's mother, Helene, was neglectful and possibly involved in drugs. They also encounter a variety of suspects, including drug dealers, a known pedophile, and a mysterious woman who claims to have information about Amanda's whereabouts.
As they dig deeper, Kenzie and Gennaro find themselves drawn into the seedy underbelly of Boston's criminal underworld. They encounter dangerous people and put themselves in harm's way in order to uncover the truth and find Amanda.
Eventually, Kenzie and Gennaro track down the kidnapper, local drug dealer Lionel McCready, Amanda's uncle. However, they are faced with a difficult moral dilemma when they realize that Amanda seems to be happy and safe in Lionel's care, despite the fact that he is a criminal.
In the end, Kenzie and Gennaro make a fateful decision that leaves them questioning their own moral compass and the choices they have made. The movie asks provocative questions about justice, morality, and the nature of love and sacrifice in a complex and violent world.
