The story follows three struggling showgirls, Carol, Trixie, and Polly, who are trying to make it on Broadway during the Great Depression. When their show is cancelled due to lack of funds, wealthy songwriter Brad Roberts offers to finance a new show for them, titled "Pretty Lady." Brad falls for Carol, but his high-society brother, J. Lawrence Bradford, disapproves of the relationship and threatens to cut off Brad's funding.

To keep the show going, Carol and her friends decide to pretend to be wealthy socialites and attract the attention of two millionaire investors, Barney Hopkins and Faneuil H. Peabody. They succeed in getting the funding they need for the show, but their scheme falls apart when J. Lawrence discovers the truth about their deception.

In the end, Brad saves the day by convincing his brother to agree to the show and even joins the cast himself. The show is a success, and Brad and Carol are reunited.

Gold Diggers of 1933 was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound. It is also notable for its frank portrayal of sex and economic anxiety during the Depression era.
