Erin, played by Drew Barrymore, and Garrett, played by Justin Long, meet at a New York City bar where they hit it off immediately. They go on a six-week fling, knowing from the beginning that Erin will be leaving for San Francisco to finish her degree. However, they quickly realize they have strong feelings for each other and decide to try long-distance.
The couple struggles with the distance and the challenges of maintaining a relationship through phone calls, texts, and webcams. Erin’s pushy sister, played by Christina Applegate, encourages her to find someone closer to home, while Garrett’s friend Box, played by Jason Sudeikis, constantly reminds him that long-distance relationships never work out.
Both Erin and Garrett are offered amazing opportunities in their respective fields that could change the course of their careers. Garrett receives an offer to work with a famous music label, while Erin is given a chance to work with a renowned newspaper. As their relationship continues to be strained by the distance and their career ambitions, Erin decides to surprise Garrett and fly to New York. However, the couple gets into a huge fight, which leads to them breaking up. Erin goes back to San Francisco, heartbroken.
After some time apart, Garrett realizes he can’t live without Erin and decides to fly to San Francisco to win her back. The movie ends with them deciding to give their relationship another chance and making plans to move to Toronto together.
