The 1969 German film "Gods of the Plague" follows the story of Franz, a recently released ex-convict who returns to his hometown of Frankfurt. Upon his return, he finds that the society on the outside is disappointing, and he struggles to adjust to life in the real world.

As he tries to figure out his next move, Franz encounters a series of obstacles, including several women who try to seduce him, as well as the police, who suspect him of being involved in a recent robbery.

Despite these challenges, Franz becomes determined to find an old friend of his named Joanna, who he believes may be able to help him start over. His search takes him all over the city, and he eventually discovers that Joanna is involved in the seedy underworld of drug trafficking.

As Franz navigates this dangerous world, he begins to realize that he may never be able to escape his criminal past entirely. The film is notable for its expressionistic visuals and its dark, gritty depiction of urban life.
