Girls Just Want to Have Fun is a 1985 American teen musical comedy film directed by Alan Metter. The film follows Janey Glenn (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), a teenage girl who moves to Chicago with her family. She befriends Lynne (played by Helen Hunt), a rebellious teenager who shares Janey's passion for dancing and the popular dance show, Dance TV.

Lynne encourages Janey to enter the Dance TV competition to find the show's next regular couple. The competition attracts several talented dancers, but Janey and Lynne stand out with their unique and energetic routines. However, Janey's conservative father doesn't approve of her dancing and forbids her from participating in the competition.

Undeterred, Janey and Lynne participate in the audition secretly and make it to the final round. Meanwhile, Janey develops a romantic interest in Jeff (played by Lee Montgomery), the son of a wealthy businessman who is a contestant in the competition with his dance partner, Natalie (played by Shannen Doherty).

Janey’s father discovers her secret and forbids her from dancing further. Nevertheless, with Lynne's help, Janey sneaks out to the final round of the competition. In the end, Janey and Jeff win the competition and are made Dance TV's new regular dancers.
