Girl, Taken

Documentary  South Africa

Girl, Taken is a documentary film that follows the incredible true story of a South African family's search for their missing daughter, Zephany Nurse. The film takes viewers on a poignant journey spanning over 17 years, from Zephany's abduction at birth to the eventual discovery of her whereabouts in adulthood.

The film begins by introducing the audience to the Nurse family, a loving couple who were overjoyed to welcome their first child into the world. Just three days after Zephany's birth, the couple woke up to find that their baby girl had been taken from their home without a trace. The film then explores the family's desperate search for their missing daughter, their heartbreak and frustration as years passed with no leads or resolution.

In 2015, the family's younger daughter, Cassidy, began attending a new school and became friends with a girl who looked strikingly similar to Zephany. After comparing baby pictures and noticing other similarities, the Nurse family contacted the authorities and requested a DNA test. The results showed that the girl, who had grown up believing her name was Miché Solomon, was in fact their missing daughter, Zephany.

The film goes on to tell the heart-wrenching story of Zephany's reunion with her biological family and the emotional aftermath that followed. Despite the overwhelming evidence and love of her biological family, Zephany chose to remain with the woman who had abducted her and raised her as her own.

The film offers a unique perspective on the complexities of identity, family bonds, and the long-lasting effects of abduction and loss. Through interviews with the family members, excerpts from news broadcasts, and reenactments of key events, Girl, Taken provides a gripping and emotional account of one family's journey to find their missing daughter.
