Lost in the Wonderland of Madness

Drama  Germany,United States of America

Girl, Interrupted is a movie based on the memoir of the same name by Susanna Kaysen, who was institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital for nearly two years in the late 1960s. The movie follows Susanna, played by Winona Ryder, as she checks herself into the hospital after having suicidal thoughts.

Once in the hospital, Susanna meets a group of other young women with various mental illnesses, including borderline personality disorder, depression, and sociopathy. She becomes particularly close with Lisa, played by Angelina Jolie, who is a charismatic, rebellious patient with a history of being in and out of psychiatric institutions.

Throughout the movie, Susanna struggles with her own thoughts and feelings about her illness and her stay in the hospital. She questions the system and authority figures, and eventually begins to understand the complex web of relationships between the patients and the staff.

As Susanna's treatment progresses, she grapples with the idea of leaving the safe, structured world of the hospital and re-entering the real world. She ultimately chooses to leave the hospital, but the decision is not an easy one and she must confront the challenges of living with her mental illness without the constant support and supervision of the hospital.

Girl, Interrupted is a powerful and emotional exploration of mental illness, institutionalization, and the human condition. The performances of Ryder and Jolie were widely praised, with Jolie winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The movie continues to resonate with audiences today, nearly 20 years after its release.
