The movie Girl in the Closet is based on the true story of Lauren Kavanaugh, who was locked in a closet for six years by her mother and stepfather. The film follows the story of Cameron, who is played by Stefanie Scott, and her traumatic experience of being locked in the basement for ten years by her Aunt Mia, played by Abigail Breslin.
Cameron's life takes a dark turn when she discovers the truth about her aunt's illegal activities. She finds out that Mia has been chaining people to the walls in the basement and cashing their benefit checks. Fearing that Cameron might reveal her secrets, Mia locks her up in the closet and tells everyone that she has run away. The police are unable to find any trace of Cameron, and she is presumed missing for ten years.
Throughout her time in the closet, Cameron is forced to endure the horrors of being locked up in a small and cramped space, with no access to light or fresh air. She is also subjected to physical and emotional abuse by her aunt, who visits her occasionally to remind her of her hopeless situation.
However, Cameron's story takes a turn for the better when a new neighbor moves in, played by Mira Sorvino. The neighbor becomes suspicious of Mia and alerts the authorities. The police finally discover the horrors that have been happening in Mia's home and rescue Cameron from the closet.
