Nighttime Encounters: A Journey Home

Drama  Belgium,Netherlands

Ghost Tropic is a 2019 Belgian drama film directed by Bas Devos. The film follows Khadija, a fifty-eight-year-old cleaning woman who falls asleep on the subway after a long day at work. When she wakes up, she finds herself at the end of the line with no money and no way home.

Determined to make her way home, Khadija embarks on a journey through the streets of Brussels, encountering various people and obstacles along the way. Despite being tired and alone, she finds herself compelled to help others in need, including a homeless man and a sex worker.

Throughout her journey, Khadija's sense of community and compassion grows, as she encounters a side of the city she never knew existed. Ghost Tropic is a poignant exploration of human connection and the power of empathy, told through the eyes of one woman's journey through the night.

The film received critical acclaim for its understated yet powerful storytelling, and lead actress Saadia Bentaïeb's nuanced portrayal of Khadija. It premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and went on to screen at a number of international festivals.
