Ray (played by Macaulay Culkin) is a young boy who has been living with his aunt and uncle since his mother's death. His father, Ray Sr. (played by Ted Danson), is a recently released ex-con who has dreams of opening his own bakery. Ray Sr., along with his two accomplices, Bobby (played by Saul Rubinek) and Carl (played by Gailard Sartain), comes up with a plan to steal a rare collection of coins from a local museum to finance his bakery.

As the heist is being planned, Ray Jr. shows up unexpectedly at his father's apartment. Ray Sr. is not happy to see him and asks his son to stay out of the way during the heist. However, Ray Jr. accidentally gets in the way and ends up becoming an unwitting accomplice to the theft.

After the heist, Ray Jr. steals the coins from his father and hides them around the city. Ray Sr. is forced to spend time with his son in order to find the coins. This leads to many humorous and heartwarming moments as the two grow closer to each other. Ray Jr. is initially hesitant to trust his father, but as they bond over various activities (such as watching baseball games and going to an amusement park), he begins to warm up to him.

Eventually, Ray Sr. and his accomplices are able to find most of the coins with the help of Ray Jr. However, Ray Jr. refuses to give up the final coin unless his father agrees to give up his criminal ways and turn over a new leaf. In the end, Ray Sr. agrees and the two finally reconcile, with Ray Jr. agreeing to come live with him at his new bakery.

Overall, Getting Even with Dad is a heartwarming and comedic family film that explores the themes of redemption, family, and second chances.
