Chili Palmer, played by John Travolta, is a smooth-talking mobster who is sent to Las Vegas to collect a debt. While there, he becomes entranced by the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and decides to pursue a career in the movie industry.
He meets Harry Zimm, played by Gene Hackman, a struggling producer who is desperate for a hit. Chili sees an opportunity to use his mob connections to get Harry's latest film made, but the process turns out to be more complicated than he anticipated.
Along the way, Chili also becomes enamored with Harry's leading lady, Karen Flores, played by Rene Russo. The two develop a relationship despite Chili's dangerous profession.
The film is a sly and witty commentary on the entertainment industry, with memorable performances by the entire cast, including Danny DeVito as a rival producer and Delroy Lindo as Bones, the ruthless mob boss who is after Chili. Get Shorty was a critical and commercial success, earning Travolta a Golden Globe nomination for his role.
