Berke Landers (played by Ben Foster) is a high school senior and star basketball player who is passionately in love with his girlfriend of six years, Allison McAllister (played by Melissa Sagemiller). However, his world is shattered when Allison breaks up with him to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.
Unable to cope with the breakup and with basketball season over, Berke becomes increasingly despondent and starts to lose his mind. His friends, including an aspiring filmmaker named Felix Woods (played by Colin Hanks) and Felix's younger sister, Kelly (played by Kirsten Dunst), try to help him move on by taking him to parties and setting him up on dates, but nothing seems to work.
When Berke learns that Allison has landed the lead role in the school's spring musical, he decides to audition as well, hoping to win her back and prove that he's more than just a jock. Despite having no musical talent, Berke impresses the director (played by Martin Short) with his enthusiasm and wins a small role in the show.
As rehearsals begin, Berke is forced to work closely with Kelly, who is also in the show. Initially, Berke wants nothing to do with Kelly, seeing her only as Felix's annoying little sister. However, as he spends more time with her, he begins to see her in a new light and slowly starts to fall for her. Meanwhile, Allison, who is still attracted to Berke, becomes jealous of his growing friendship with Kelly and starts to reconsider her decision to break up with him.
The love triangle between Berke, Allison, and Kelly begins to heat up as the opening night of the musical approaches. Berke must decide whether to pursue his true feelings for Kelly or try to win Allison back, while Kelly must decide whether to risk her friendship with Berke and pursue her own feelings for him.
