Gerry is a 2002 independent film directed by Gus Van Sant, starring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon as two friends both named Gerry who become lost while hiking in a remote wilderness area. The film is heavily improvised, with sparse dialogue and long quiet stretches, as the two men wander through the harsh desert landscape in search of a way out.
As they struggle to find their way back to civilization, the two Gerrys grow increasingly desperate and disoriented. They argue over which direction to take and begin to hallucinate, with one of them falling into a deep pit and injuring himself. The film was largely shot on location in Death Valley National Park and the salt flats of Utah, with stunning cinematography that captures the stark beauty of the desert landscape.
