Race to the Finish Line

Comedy  United Kingdom

Genevieve is a 1953 British comedy film about two couples taking part in the annual London to Brighton vintage car rally. The main characters, Alan and Ambrose, are friends who have both entered the rally with their vintage cars, a 1904 Darracq and a 1905 Spyker respectively. They bet on who will come first and the winner will keep their beloved cars while the loser has to sell their car and buy a new one.

Along the way, the two couples encounter various mishaps and adventures as they travel through the English countryside, including getting lost, running out of fuel, and getting into arguments with other rally participants. The women, Rosalind and Wendy, also become involved in their own humorous subplots, including a case of mistaken identity and a flirtation with a wealthy car enthusiast.

As the rally draws to a close, Alan's Darracq and Ambrose's Spyker are neck and neck, with both couples determined to win the bet. In the end, Alan and Rosalind cross the finish line first, but only by cheating by using a shortcut. Ambrose is furious but Alan agrees to sell his car and split the money with him, allowing them both to keep their beloved cars.

Genevieve was directed by Henry Cornelius and starred John Gregson, Dinah Sheridan, Kenneth More, and Kay Kendall. The film was a critical and commercial success and remains a beloved British classic.
