Andrew Largeman (played by Zach Braff) is a struggling actor in Los Angeles who has been on anti-depressants since the age of nine. He returns to his hometown of New Jersey for his mother's funeral and decides to stop taking his medication. In New Jersey, he reconnects with old friends and meets Sam (played by Natalie Portman) who is a compulsive liar and epileptic. Andrew and Sam quickly form a bond, and they start to fall in love.
Over the next few days, Andrew and Sam spend time together, exploring their town and confronting their own demons. Andrew's father, who is a psychologist, tries to reconnect with him, but their relationship is strained due to past misunderstandings. Andrew must also confront his past and come to terms with his emotions and the pain that he has been suppressing for so long.
As Andrew begins to open up to others, he starts to feel alive again and gains clarity about his future. He decides to stay in New Jersey, reconnect with his friends, and pursue a relationship with Sam. The film ends with Andrew and Sam sitting on a wall, watching the sunrise and discussing their future.
