The 1980s sci-fi show in Galaxy Quest is called "Galaxy Quest" and stars Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) as the heroic captain, Peter Quincy Taggart. The rest of the cast is made up of Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), who played the ship's communications officer, Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman), who played the alien science officer, Fred Kwan (Tony Shalhoub), who played the chief engineer, and Tommy Webber (Daryl Mitchell), who played the child pilot.
After attending a fan convention for their show, the cast members are approached by a group of aliens known as the Thermians. The Thermians are a peaceful race of beings who have modeled their entire society on the old Galaxy Quest episodes. They need the help of the crew to defeat an evil warlord named Sarris (Robin Sachs) who has taken over their home planet.
Nesmith, DeMarco, Dane, Kwan, and Webber are beamed aboard the Thermian's starship, which is an exact replica of the Galaxy Quest spaceship. They are initially confused by their surroundings and believe that they are part of an elaborate fanfiction or virtual reality experience. However, they soon realize that the threat is real and that they must use their acting skills to save the day.
The crew must navigate the challenges of space travel and intergalactic warfare while dealing with the Thermians' naivete and cultural misunderstandings. Along the way, they also encounter a rival spaceship crew led by a former co-star of Nesmith's named Guy Fleegman (Sam Rockwell).
In the end, the Galaxy Quest crew manages to defeat Sarris and save the Thermians, earning them the respect of their alien fans and a renewed sense of purpose. The experience also brings the cast members closer together and helps them appreciate the impact of their work on both their audience and the wider universe.
