Special Effects Showdown: Betrayal and Revenge

Crime,Thriller,Action  United States of America

"F/X" is a 1986 thriller directed by Robert Mandel and starring Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy. Brown plays Rollie Tyler, a special effects artist who is hired by the Justice Department to stage the assassination of Nicholas DeFranco, a high-ranking member of the New York mafia who is set to enter the witness protection program. Rollie is tasked with creating a convincing fake murder scene to convince DeFranco's enemies that he is dead, and to trick DeFranco himself into revealing the location of a hidden microfilm.

Rollie's plan seems to succeed, but he soon discovers that the Justice Department has double-crossed him and plans to kill DeFranco for real. He goes on the run, taking DeFranco with him, and uses his skills as a special effects artist to create elaborate illusions that confuse and trap the corrupt agents who are hunting them.

As Rollie and DeFranco evade capture and fight to clear their names, they uncover a web of corruption and deceit that reaches all the way to the highest levels of government. Along the way, Rollie uses everything from fake blood and explosive devices to holograms and remote-controlled helicopters to stay one step ahead of his pursuers.

"F/X" received positive reviews for its inventive premise, thrilling action sequences, and strong performances by Brown and Dennehy. It was followed by a sequel, "F/X2," in 1991.
