Funny Story follows Walter, a well-intentioned but flawed father who is trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter Nic. As they set out to embark on an impromptu road trip to reconnect, things begin to unravel quite quickly.
The first hitch in their plan arises when Nic tells Walter that she's actually going to meet her girlfriend in San Francisco instead. Regardless, Walter stubbornly insists on continuing the journey, and the two eventually make it to California.
Once they arrive, Walter impulsively decides to take a detour to see his ex-girlfriend, ultimately causing Nic to feel deeply betrayed. This betrayal pushes Nic over the edge, and she ultimately lashes out by drunkenly revealing to one of Walter's friends that he has had issues with alcoholism in the past.
The situation only escalates from there, and before long, Walter's daughter and friends are all caught up in a tangled web of betrayal, secrets, and unintended consequences. Throughout it all, Walter is desperate to make things right with Nic, but it seems he may have gone too far to ever earn forgiveness.
As the story winds to a close, Walter is forced to confront his past mistakes head-on, and he must decide whether or not he is willing to fully take responsibility for his actions. Funny Story is a touching and thought-provoking film that explores the complexities of family relationships, forgiveness, and the unexpected ways in which our actions can impact those we love.
