Haunted Harmony: A Family's Struggle in the Eastern Townships

Drama  Canada

Frontiers is a drama film directed by Éric Tessier and written by Patrick Senécal. It was released in 2007 in Quebec, Canada. The movie is the story of Diane Messier (played by Isabelle Blais), a young woman who lives on a farm with her daughter Sarah and her two sisters, Carmen and Julie.

Diane is still haunted by a tragic accident that happened a year earlier, which claimed the life of her husband, David. She is filled with fear and believes that her house is haunted by his spirit. She starts to have strange visions and hear noises that she cannot explain.

As Judith (Sylvie Moreau), a neighbor from the village, tries to help her to overcome her fears, Diane receives visits from her sisters, Carmen (Julie du Page) and Julie (Bianca Gervais), who are also worried about her mental state. The arrival of Angèle (Mireille Thibault), an older sister who has been living in Florida, brings hope for reconciliation and comfort.

However, tensions arise between the sisters as they try to uncover the truth about David's death. Diane becomes increasingly unstable, struggling to find a way to move forward with her life. She finds solace in the company of Sarah, her daughter, who seems to understand her in a way that nobody else can.

The film explores themes of family relationships, grief, and mental illness. The characters are well-developed, and the performances are excellent, especially Isabelle Blais, who gives a nuanced and emotional portrayal of Diane's struggles.

Frontiers is a poignant and heartbreaking movie that will leave viewers with a lot to think about. It is a well-crafted drama that shows the impact of tragedy on people's lives and how they try to cope with it.
