The story takes place in the 1950s and follows young executive Alfred Eaton as he rises to the top of New York's financial world. Alfred's ambition and relentless drive lead him to marry Mary St. John, a beautiful but unfaithful woman from a wealthy family. Despite their extravagant lifestyle and the birth of two children, Alfred quickly realizes he is unhappy in his marriage.

Alfred's true love is Natalie Benzinger, a much younger woman who works as a secretary in his office. Natalie is kind and empathetic, and Alfred finds himself drawn to her warmth and sincerity. As Alfred's marriage crumbles, he begins a passionate affair with Natalie, risking everything he has worked for to be with her.

Despite his success in business, Alfred is unhappy and unfulfilled. He must decide whether to continue pursuing his career goals or start anew with Natalie. Along the way, he confronts issues of class, social ambition, and personal longing.

The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Oscar nominations for Best Sound and Best Art Direction. It is noted for its exploration of complex emotions and social issues, as well as its portrayal of a changing America in the midst of the post-World War II boom.
