Upon moving into their aunt's home, Nora and Mary struggle to adjust to their new surroundings and lifestyle. They initially clash with their working-class, Mexican-American cousins and neighbors, but gradually begin to appreciate and embrace their heritage.
Nora starts working at a legal aid clinic, where she meets Bruno (Wilmer Valderrama), a dedicated and hardworking law student from the neighborhood who helps her to understand the struggles of the community. Mary, on the other hand, starts to fall for Rodrigo (Nicholas D'Agosto), a charming and handsome young man from a wealthy family, causing tension within the already complicated family dynamics.
The sisters also discover secrets about their family's past, including their father's relationship with their aunt and the reasons for their estrangement. Through their experiences in Boyle Heights, Nora and Mary learn the true meaning of family, community, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
