From Hell is a 2001 American horror film directed by the Hughes brothers and starring Johnny Depp as Inspector Frederick Abberline, a detective assigned to investigate the notorious Jack the Ripper murders in London's Whitechapel district during the late 1880s. The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by writer Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell.

Abberline becomes obsessed with the case, relying on his intuition and unconventional methods as he searches for the killer. Along the way, he develops a romantic relationship with Mary Kelly (Heather Graham), a prostitute whom he believes may be the next intended victim of the Ripper.

As Abberline delves deeper into the case, he begins to uncover a conspiracy involving high-ranking officials and members of the royal family, leading him to suspect that the true identity of the Ripper may be someone much closer to him than he ever imagined.

The film has been praised for its atmospheric cinematography, as well as the performances of its lead actors, particularly Depp. However, some critics have criticized the film's liberties with historical accuracy and its portrayal of the Ripper case.
