Fritz the Cat is a 1972 adult animated comedy film directed by Ralph Bakshi. It is based on the underground comic book character created by Robert Crumb. The film is set in New York City during the late 1960s and follows the adventures of Fritz, a college student cat who becomes disillusioned with society and engages in a series of wild and often drug-fueled escapades.

Fritz initially rebels against authority figures such as his parents, the police, and the military. He attends college and becomes involved in radical student movements, but soon becomes disillusioned with their lack of real change and turns to hedonistic pursuits. He has numerous sexual encounters, often with anthropomorphic animals and people, and parties with drug dealers and hippies.

Throughout the film, Fritz encounters various distorted and satirical versions of real-life figures and movements from the 1960s, including political figures like Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey, as well as counterculture figures like Timothy Leary and the Black Panthers. The film is known for its explicit sexual content and drug use, as well as its irreverent and often controversial satire.

Fritz the Cat was a commercial success, becoming the first animated film to receive an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. It is still considered a landmark in independent animation and remains a cult classic.
