The film follows the parallel stories of Evelyn Couch, a depressed and overweight housewife struggling with her life, and Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman living in a nursing home. The two form an unlikely friendship as Ninny shares stories from her past, specifically about a close friend of hers, Idgie Threadgoode, and her romantic relationship with Ruth Jamison.
In the flashback scenes, we see Idgie and Ruth overcome various obstacles such as racism and domestic abuse in their small southern town. They also run the Whistle Stop Cafe together, which serves up delicious fried green tomatoes and becomes a hub for the local community.
