In the opening scene, we see a young Rennie drowning in Crystal Lake while a young Jason Voorhees watches from the shore. Fast forward years later and Rennie is now graduating high school and preparing to leave for New York City with her class aboard the S.S. Lazarus.
Rennie is plagued by nightmares throughout the trip as she tries to deal with her fear of water and her traumatic experience at Crystal Lake. Her uncle keeps her on a tight leash, while her favorite teacher tries to help her cope. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Sean is trying to convince her to pursue her dreams and leave her uncle's strict upbringing behind.
As the ship sets sail, it becomes clear that someone is on board who is not supposed to be there. A stowaway is revealed to be Jason, who has somehow managed to survive his last encounter with Tommy Jarvis and is now seeking fresh victims.
One by one, Jason methodically takes out Rennie's classmates and anyone who gets in his way. As the ship nears New York City, Rennie and the remaining survivors must try to stop Jason before he reaches land and continues his killing spree.
The movie features a number of memorable scenes, including Jason's chase through the crowded streets of Times Square and his final confrontation with Rennie and Sean on a rooftop overlooking the city skyline.
