The couple in love is Kate (Meg Ryan) and Charlie (Timothy Hutton). Charlie goes on a business trip to Paris and Kate stays behind in Canada. While Charlie is away, he falls in love with a French woman named Juliette (Suzan Anbeh) and calls off the wedding with Kate.
Devastated and determined to win Charlie back, Kate decides to fly to Paris to confront him. On the flight, she meets the charming Frenchman, Luc (Kevin Kline), who is a petty thief. Unknowingly, Kate gets involved in a smuggling scheme when Luc hides a stolen necklace in her bag.
Upon arrival in France, Kate is detained by customs officials who suspect her of being a smuggler. Luc comes to her rescue claiming the necklace is his and they escape together. Kate discovers that Charlie and Juliette are in Cannes, so Kate and Luc set off to find them.
As Kate tries to win back Charlie's heart, Luc is pursued by a mobster who wants the necklace back. The chase leads Kate and Luc through the French countryside and they eventually find themselves in Cannes where they confront Charlie and Juliette.
In the end, Kate realizes that she is truly in love with Luc and they share a kiss under the Eiffel Tower while Charlie and Juliette board a plane back to the United States. Luc returns the necklace to its rightful owner and Kate decides to stay in France with him.
