The scientist, named Joe Buchanan, is played by actor John Hurt. He is sent back in time along with his advanced car after a catastrophic malfunction of his time travel device during a military test. In 1817 Switzerland, he discovers that Dr. Frankenstein (played by Raul Julia) is a real person and not just a fictional character as he had believed.
Buchanan, a man of science, is immediately fascinated by Frankenstein's work and begins to study it closely. He soon realizes that Frankenstein's experiments with creating life could have led to a disastrous chain of events that could endanger the future of the world.
While in Switzerland, Buchanan also meets the famous author Mary Shelley (played by Bridget Fonda) who is still in the process of writing her novel about Frankenstein. He becomes enamored with her and tries to share his knowledge of the future with her, hoping to influence her writing of the story.
As Buchanan begins to unravel the mysteries surrounding Frankenstein's work, he encounters a series of strange and inexplicable occurrences in the local area. People and objects begin to disappear, events seem to happen out of sequence, and he finds himself drifting back and forth between different timelines.
The movie delves into complex philosophical questions about the nature of time and the consequences of scientific progress. Frankenstein Unbound explores the ethical implications of playing God, and the dangers of losing sight of one's own humanity in the pursuit of scientific advancement.
