The couple, played by Toni Collette and Ioan Gruffudd, have been struggling to deal with the loss of their son and hope that adopting a child will give them a new sense of purpose and healing. However, when Eli arrives, they quickly realize that he is not an ordinary child. He exhibits strange behaviors, such as speaking in a language they do not understand and having nightmares that seem all too real.
As they try to understand Eli's background and why he was sent to them, they begin to uncover a dark and sinister past that threatens their safety and sanity.
