Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks, is born with a low IQ and leg braces. Despite this, he manages to become a football star in high school and gets into the University of Alabama on a football scholarship. However, after graduation, he becomes a shrimp boat captain in his hometown of Greenbow, Alabama.
Forrest is present during some of the most significant events in American history, including the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and the civil rights movement. He becomes a war hero, receives the Medal of Honor, and is also present during the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the founder of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs.
Throughout his life, Forrest is in love with his childhood friend, Jenny, played by Robin Wright. However, their paths diverge as Jenny struggles with substance abuse and a turbulent lifestyle.
Forrest's life takes a turn when he invests in a fruit company called Apple, which later becomes very successful, making him a millionaire. He uses his wealth to give back to his community and takes care of those who have been good to him, including his mother, his friend Bubba's family, and Lieutenant Dan, a fellow Vietnam War veteran.
In the end, Jenny returns to Forrest and they get married. However, their happiness is short-lived as Jenny dies from an unknown illness, leaving Forrest to raise their son alone. The film ends with Forrest watching his son board a school bus, realizing that he has taught him everything he knows about life.
