Peter Bretter is a struggling composer who has been dating famous TV actress Sarah Marshall for five years. When Sarah abruptly ends their relationship, Peter is devastated and unable to move on. He is still in love with her and is unable to write any new music, causing problems for his career.
In an attempt to move on, Peter's stepbrother Brian suggests he take a vacation to Hawaii. Upon arriving, Peter meets Rachel, a beautiful local woman who works at the hotel where he is staying. The two hit it off and Peter begins to develop feelings for her.
However, things take a turn when Peter discovers that Sarah and her new boyfriend, Aldous Snow, a wild rock star, are also staying at the same resort. Peter's jealousy and awkward encounters with Sarah and Aldous make things even more complicated.
Through a series of comedic misadventures, including a surfing lesson gone wrong and a disastrous dinner date, Peter begins to realize that he needs to move on from Sarah and embrace his feelings for Rachel. In the end, Peter performs a piece he wrote for Sarah at a local bar, but it is Rachel who ultimately hears it and encourages him to move forward with his career and his feelings for her.
