Ben Holmes, played by Ben Affleck, is a successful book-jacket blurbologist who is on his way to Savannah, Georgia to get married to his fiancée Bridget. However, as he boards his flight, a seagull crashes into one of the plane's engines, causing it to malfunction. The flight is cancelled, and Ben is forced to find an alternative mode of transportation if he wants to make it to his wedding on time.
He meets Sarah, played by Sandra Bullock, at the airport, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. She offers him a ride in her cramped Geo Metro, and the two set off on a wild and wacky road trip across the United States.
As they journey through the country, Ben begins to question his impending marriage to Bridget and realizes that his feelings for Sarah are growing stronger.
