For Whom the Bell Tolls is a 1943 American war film directed by Sam Wood and starring Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, and Akim Tamiroff. It is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway, which tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American volunteer who travels to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to fight against the fascist forces of General Francisco Franco.

Jordan is given the task of blowing up a strategically important bridge in the mountains, in order to slow down the advance of Franco's troops. He is aided in his mission by a group of guerrilla fighters led by Pablo, a disillusioned former soldier who has lost faith in the cause.

As Jordan prepares for the mission, he falls in love with Maria, a young girl who has been rescued from a fascist massacre. Their relationship blossoms amidst the chaos of war, but is threatened by the impending danger of the mission and the uncertainty of the future.

The plot of For Whom the Bell Tolls is set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, which was fought between the Republican forces (supported by left-leaning groups and countries) and the Nationalist forces (supported by fascist groups and countries). The film explores themes such as war, sacrifice, love, and the struggle for freedom amidst political conflict.

The movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning one for Best Supporting Actress for Katina Paxinou's portrayal of Pilar, a strong-willed guerrilla fighter. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $6 million at the box office.
