Lauren and Katie initially cannot stand each other, stemming from their past rivalry in college. Lauren is a prim and proper book editor, while Katie is a free-spirited party girl who can never seem to hold down a job. However, when Katie's grandmother passes away, leaving her rent-controlled apartment to Katie, Katie realizes she can no longer afford her portion of the rent and must find a roommate. Lauren, who has just been dumped by her boyfriend and evicted from her apartment, reluctantly agrees to be Katie's new roommate.
The two girls clash at first, with Lauren put off by Katie's messy habits and constant partying, and Katie resenting Lauren's uptight attitude. However, one night, while Lauren is trying to sleep, she is disturbed by Katie's loud sexual activity. The girls must navigate these obstacles while also confronting their own hopes and dreams for the future. Ultimately, they learn that they are stronger together and that true friendship can survive even the messiest of beginnings.
