Flying Down to Rio is a 1933 musical film directed by Thornton Freeland and starred Dolores del Río, Gene Raymond, Raul Roulien and Ginger Rogers. The story follows Roger Bond, a dance band leader from New York City, who is hired by a Brazilian casino owner to lead his band. When Bond arrives in Rio de Janeiro, he falls in love with Belinha, a young Brazilian woman who is engaged to another man.

The film is most notable for its iconic dance numbers, which were choreographed by Fred Astaire and featured prominently in the movie. In particular, the film introduces the concept of "The Flying Trapeze" dance, in which dancer's movements simulate that of a trapeze artist soaring through the air.

Despite its success, Flying Down to Rio was not initially intended to be a starring vehicle for its cast, and was instead produced as a showcase for the RKO Radio Pictures studio's new Technicolor technology. However, the film's popularity led to a series of subsequent musicals featuring Astaire and Rogers, establishing them as some of the era's most popular screen performers.
