The main character of the film is a young man named Kwan (played by Richie Ren) who works as an audio tape typist in a hospital. Despite being blind and mute, Kwan has a warm and gentle spirit, and is beloved by his coworkers at the hospital.
One of Kwan's closest friends at the hospital is a nurse named May (played by Cecilia Cheung), who is initially shy and reserved but eventually comes to love Kwan deeply. However, Kwan is too nervous to confess his feelings to May, fearing that his disability will make him unworthy of her affection.
One day, while walking home from work, Kwan is struck by a car and dies. However, instead of passing into the afterlife immediately, Kwan finds himself in a strange limbo state. He learns that he is the sixty billionth human being to die on earth, and as a result he has been given a special reprieve: he will be allowed to return to earth for five days, during which time he can be reunited with his loved ones and say goodbye to the world he once knew.
At first, Kwan is overjoyed by the prospect of being reunited with May. However, he soon realizes that he cannot reveal his true identity to her, as she would never believe that he had come back from the dead. Instead, Kwan assumes the guise of a mysterious stranger who befriends May and helps her through a difficult time in her life.
As Kwan and May grow closer during the five days they have together, they must navigate a series of obstacles and misunderstandings that threaten to tear them apart. However, through their unwavering love and devotion to each other, they learn to overcome these challenges and embrace the bittersweet beauty of life.
