Throughout the film, Mel struggles to come to terms with his identity and understand where he came from. He seeks out his birth parents, but the journey is not easy. They encounter a series of roadblocks and obstacles, including a hilarious mix-up where they end up visiting the wrong couple. As they continue on their journey, Mel and Nancy begin to doubt their relationship and wonder if they are truly meant to be together.
Meanwhile, Tina, the adoption agent, finds herself attracted to Mel and begins to make advances towards him. This only adds to the chaos of their journey and creates even more hilarious situations. Along the way, they encounter several eccentric characters including a deaf psychologist (Lily Tomlin) and an ATF agent who develops a crush on Tina.
As they approach the climax of their journey, Mel starts to question whether finding his birth parents was worth it and begins to wonder if he should simply embrace the family he already has. The film ends on a heartwarming note, with Mel realizing that family is not just about biology, but about the people who love and support us.
