The group of teenagers, who are on the hayride include the main characters: Alex, the tough and resourceful leader; Rachel, his love interest; Jake, the goofball; and Anna, the brains of the group. As they stumble upon the grave of the deceased man, they notice his tombstone has been broken and his body is missing.
The group is attacked by the first zombie, who is the old man they discovered earlier. They manage to escape and get back to their town, only to be horrified to find that the zombie virus has spread and many of their friends and family members have turned into zombies.
At first, the group attempts to fight off the zombies on their own, but they quickly realize they are outnumbered and outmatched. They seek help from the local authorities, but they are unable to contain the outbreak and are eventually overwhelmed.
As the zombie horde grows in size and strength, the group decides to take matters into their own hands and search for a way to stop the zombies once and for all. They discover that the source of the virus is a strange man who has been secretly experimenting with reanimation of the dead.
With the help of a few surviving townspeople, the group embarks on a dangerous mission to find and take down the mad scientist responsible for the zombie outbreak. Along the way, they have to fight off hordes of zombies, as well as the scientist's undead creations.
In a final showdown, the group is able to confront the scientist and destroy the facility, but not before losing a few of their own to the zombie horde. It ends with the group returning to town, battered and bruised, but with a newfound appreciation for the fragility of life and determination to fight for survival.
