The movie follows the five medical students - Courtney (Ellen Page), Ray (Diego Luna), Marlo (Nina Dobrev), Jamie (James Norton) and Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) - as they begin experimenting with inducing near-death experiences. Each student takes turns being put under general anesthesia and having their heart stopped, before being revived after a few minutes.
As they continue with the experiment, the students begin to experience strange visions and hallucinations from their pasts, leading them to believe that they are being haunted by their own guilt and regrets. Courtney becomes increasingly obsessed with pushing the boundaries of the experiment, leading them to take longer and more dangerous risks.
Their actions have consequences, however, as the students begin to experience more physical and psychological side effects from each subsequent near-death experience. They must face their demons head-on and come to terms with their past mistakes, or risk being consumed by them forever.
As the group delves deeper into the world of near-death experiences, they discover that their actions may have opened a portal to something beyond their control - something that may have deadly consequences for them all.
