Five Star

Drama  United States of America

Five Star is a 2014 American drama film directed by Keith Miller. The film explores the life of a young man named John, who lives in Brooklyn with his mother and absent father. One day, John's father is struck by a stray bullet, and he meets Primo, a member of the Bloods, who takes it upon himself to teach John about the code of the streets.

Primo has been a member of the Bloods since the age of twelve and has never known anything other than the life of gang culture. As John begins to question whether or not to enter into this lifestyle, Primo struggles with the decision to leave it all behind and become a better husband and father.

The film is set during the hot summer weeks in New York, adding to the intensity of the story. The director, Keith Miller, takes a quiet and observational approach to the lives of these two men, avoiding clichés and focusing on the reality of their situation. The line between fiction and reality is intentionally blurred, allowing the story to resonate beyond the streets as they both grapple with the question of what it means to be a man.

Five Star received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of gang culture and the relationship between John and Primo. The film was praised for its realistic approach and strong performances, particularly from James "Primo" Grant, who played himself in the film.
