Five Miles to Midnight is a 1962 French-Italian film directed by Anatole Litvak and starring Sophia Loren and Anthony Perkins. The film tells the story of Lisa (Loren) and Robert (Perkins), a couple who are unhappily married. Lisa longs for independence and wishes to leave her abusive and manipulative husband Robert, but she finds it hard to sever ties with him.
After Lisa decides to finally leave Robert, he surprisingly dies in a plane crash. But Robert has actually faked his own death, and he contacts Lisa to request that she collect his life insurance policy. The film takes its audience on a thrilling ride as Lisa desperately tries to navigate the complications of the plan while avoiding Robert's jealousy and countering the advances of an aggressive suitor, played by Gig Young.
As the plan goes into action, Lisa discovers a sense of guilt that she had not anticipated. The film explores the themes of betrayal, guilt, and the consequences of one's actions while asking the question: is their relationship redeemable?
