First Knight is a 1995 American romantic adventure film directed by Jerry Zucker. It stars Sean Connery as King Arthur, Richard Gere as Lancelot, and Julia Ormond as Guinevere.
The film opens with Lancelot arriving in Camelot and challenging the knights to a joust. He defeats them all and catches the eye of Guinevere, who is engaged to King Arthur. Unbeknownst to Guinevere, Lancelot is in fact a thief who has been banished from his own land.
As Lancelot becomes more involved in Camelot, he develops a close relationship with Arthur and falls deeply in love with Guinevere. Guinevere feels the same way, but she is conflicted about betraying her husband and her duty to the kingdom.
Meanwhile, the villainous Malagant is plotting to overthrow Arthur and take control of Camelot. He sees Guinevere as a way to gain access to the kingdom and sets his sights on capturing her.
In the climactic battle, Lancelot and the other knights of Camelot go up against Malagant and his army. Lancelot is wounded but manages to defeat Malagant and save Guinevere. However, in the wake of the battle, Guinevere realizes that she cannot stay with Lancelot and returns to Arthur, who forgives her for her indiscretions.
First Knight was a commercial success, grossing over $127 million worldwide. However, it received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the production design and the performances of Connery and Gere but criticized the film's pacing and lack of historical accuracy.
