Comedy  United States of America

First Family is a 1980 American comedy film directed by Buck Henry and starring Bob Newhart, Madeline Kahn, Gilda Radner, Richard Benjamin, and Harvey Korman. The movie follows the life of an unnamed President of the United States (played by Newhart), the First Lady (played by Kahn), and their family.

The film begins with the President and his family arriving in Africa to oversee the signing of a trade agreement. However, their daughter is kidnapped by a group of rebels who demand the release of their leader in exchange for her safe return.

The President enlists the help of his trusted advisor, a bumbling Secret Service agent named Sturdevant (played by Benjamin), and an African official (played by Korman) to help negotiate with the rebels. Meanwhile, the First Lady drowns her sorrows in alcohol and gets into a series of comical misadventures.

As the negotiations drag on, the President and his family begin to question the value of politics and the price of power. The film ends with the rebels freeing the President's daughter and the family returning to the United States.

Critics were mostly negative towards the movie, with most describing it as "uneven" and lacking in laughs. However, the performances of Newhart, Kahn, and Radner were praised. The film was also a box office disappointment, failing to recoup its budget.
