Cow and Collaborator: Western Fortune Duo

Drama,History  United States of America

"First Cow" is a 2019 American drama film directed by Kelly Reichardt. The film follows the story of a skilled cook named Cookie (John Magaro) who has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory. He is a taciturn loner who doesn't seem to fit in with the rough and rugged group of fur trappers. However, he finds a true connection with a Chinese immigrant named King-Lu (Orion Lee), who is also seeking his fortune in the west.

Cookie and King-Lu soon collaborate on a successful business venture. They start making delicious fried cakes using milk stolen from a nearby wealthy landowner's prized milking cow. Their cakes become popular among the people in the territory, and they start making good profits.

However, their business is threatened when the landowner discovers that his cow's milk is being used without his knowledge. He sets out to find the culprits and punish them. Cookie and King-Lu must decide whether to abandon their business or risk everything to keep it going.

The film is a slow-burning drama that explores themes of capitalism, class struggle, and friendship. It is shot in a naturalistic style that captures the rugged beauty of the Oregon wilderness. The performances by the lead actors are excellent, and the film is a testament to the power of simple storytelling. Overall, "First Cow" is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that is definitely worth watching.
