In Fire Over England, the Spanish ambassador to England attempts to form an alliance with the English Catholic nobility, but the Queen's spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, is determined to uncover their plans. Meanwhile, a Spanish nobleman, Don Miguel de Silva (Laurence Olivier), becomes enamored with the Queen's lady-in-waiting, Cynthia (Vivien Leigh), and takes her back to Spain as his wife.
As tensions rise between the two countries, the Spanish Armada sets sail with the intention of invading England. Despite being severely outnumbered, the English fleet, led by Drake (Raymond Massey), is able to outmaneuver the Spanish ships and cause significant damage, ultimately forcing them to retreat.
Fire Over England was released in 1937 and was directed by William K. Howard. It was highly acclaimed for its performances, particularly those of Robson, Olivier, and Leigh. The film also features an early score by composer William Walton.
