Felony is a 2013 Australian crime thriller film directed by Matthew Saville and written by Joel Edgerton, who also stars in the film alongside Tom Wilkinson and Jai Courtney. The story revolves around three detectives: Malcolm, Carl, and Jim, who are united in their effort to serve and protect the community, but who hold vastly different moral codes.
One night, after celebrating the successful arrest of a suspected drug trafficker, Malcolm (Edgerton) speeds through a suburban intersection and collides with a young boy on a bike. The child is left in a critical condition while Malcolm flees the scene before any witnesses can see him. Carl (Wilkinson), who arrives on the scene shortly after the accident, decides to cover up Malcolm's involvement to save his fellow officer from losing his career and going to jail.
Jim (Courtney), a principled detective who believes in doing the right thing, suspects that there is more to the accident than meets the eye. He begins to investigate the case independently and soon discovers that Malcolm was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Jim confronts Malcolm and Carl about their involvement in covering up the crime, but the pair refuse to listen and continue to maintain their conspiracy of silence.
As the investigation moves forward, tensions between the three detectives escalate to dangerous levels, with each man forced to confront his own conscience and decide whether to do what is right or to protect his own interests.
The film's tense and intricate narrative examines themes of guilt, morality, and loyalty, as well as the consequences of actions taken in the search for justice. Felony received critical acclaim for its strong performances, taut direction, and affecting story.
