Renovating Chaos: Incompetent Builders and Meddling Fathers

Comedy  United Kingdom

Father Came Too! is a British comedy film directed by Peter Graham Scott and released in 1964. It stars James Robertson Justice as Colonel Harris, a wealthy and domineering father who is determined to interfere in his daughter Juliet's marriage to Dexter Munro, played by Leslie Phillips. Sally Smith plays Juliet, and Ronnie Barker plays Josh Wicks, the hapless builder hired to renovate the Munros' cottage.

The film is based on a novel by Eric Lambert and was adapted for the screen by Talbot Rothwell. It was produced by Betty E. Box, with music by Eric Rogers.

The plot revolves around Dexter and Juliet's efforts to renovate their cottage, which turns out to be a much bigger project than they anticipated. They soon run out of money and are forced to turn to Juliet's father for help, despite their reluctance to involve him. The Colonel insists on taking charge of the project, much to the dismay of Dexter and Josh, who struggle to keep up with his demanding standards.

As the renovations continue, the situation becomes more and more chaotic, with the cottage resembling a warzone rather than a home. The Colonel's interference causes tension between him and his daughter, and Dexter becomes increasingly frustrated by the bungling efforts of Josh. In the end, however, all is resolved and the cottage is completed, with Dexter and Juliet finally able to enjoy their married life in peace.

Father Came Too! was well-received by audiences and critics alike, with many praising the performances of the cast and the comedic situations which arise throughout the film. It remains a popular classic of British cinema and a notable entry in the careers of its stars and crew.
