Fatal Instinct is a 1993 American satirical comedy film directed by Carl Reiner. Michael Douglas' character from Basic Instinct, Glenn Close's character from Fatal Attraction, and Robert De Niro's character from Cape Fear all serve as inspiration for different characters in Fatal Instinct. The film stars Armand Assante as Ned Ravine, a bumbling cop and lawyer who becomes ensnared in a web of murder and deception, thanks to the seductive charms of Lana Ravine (Sean Young), a mysterious woman who hires Ned to defend her of murdering her wealthy husband.
As he tries to help Lana, Ned must also deal with his cheating wife, Lola (Kate Nelligan), who is having an affair with a greasy auto mechanic, Frank (Christopher McDonald). Meanwhile, Ned's partner, Max (Sherilyn Fenn), is secretly in love with him, and the local sheriff (Tony Randall), who has a bizarre fetish for potato chips, is suspicious of Ned's involvement in the murder case.
Throughout the movie, there are numerous parodies and references to other films of the era, including The Silence of the Lambs, Basic Instinct, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Body Heat. The film also features a number of visual gags and Fourth-wall breaks reminiscent of the Naked Gun films, such as characters looking directly at the camera and acknowledging the absurdity of the situations they find themselves in.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, Fatal Instinct has gained a cult following over the years for its over-the-top humor and clever send-ups of popular films from the late 80s and early 90s.
